ALMM stands for the Approved List of Module Manufacturers. It is a list released by India’s Ministry of New And Renewable Energy (MNRE), and lists all the manufacturers whose modules are approved for use in solar projects in India.
Following a recent notification on March 27, the MNRE has made it clear that only ALMM approved modules can be used in all government backed projects, and even projects in Open Access and Rooftop solar. That means you could potentially use foreign modules (after paying a 40% customs/import duty), only in off grid solar projects that are not subsidised in any way, if at all.

Bifacial modules produce solar power from both sides of the panel. This is based on something called the ‘albedo’ effect, where a light coloured floor or ground reflects enough light to generate electricity through the reverse side of the bi-facial solar panel. Thus, these panels can generate more power than other panels in the right conditions.
Mono-perc solar panels have a passivated emitter & and rear cell and produce from a single side.

Reliance is yet to begin manufacturing solar modules. The company will begin production By March-April 2024 at its Jamnagar facility, based on inputs provided by it. However, initially, most of their production is expected to be used for captive consumption. So you may not need modules manufactured by Reliance being available for sale until much later.
However REC, a Singapore based firm that has been in the business of making solar modules for a long time was acquired by Reliance Industries in 2021. To that extent, you can buy modules from a Reliance owned module manufacturer even today in India.

Solar modules are actually closer to an assembly process than manufacturing. All previous levels in the chain, from cells to wafers to ingot and polysilicon, are not made in India, other than a little captive capacity for solar cells with some manufacturers. Most of these are imported from China and are then embedded into a panel in India. Thus, with a capacity of over 60 GW now, in future, all solar modules you see are likely to have been ‘made’ in India.

Solar panels work at full efficiency at around 25˚C. So even in winter they work fine. Even at lower temperatures, they typically perform well if sunshine is good. Colder regions, with their lesser issues of dust are also beneficial for solar generation. Remember, solar energy is generated by light falling on solar panels, not by heat. So really hot temperatures offer no benefit to users.

Similarly, solar panels are being used on balcony’s now, besides for fencing as a solar fence. These options, while not optimum in terms of generation, do help to provide you with a solar energy source in well irradiated areas.
