Under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme, there is a cap on the capacity of a solar plant that a residential household can install. In most states, the sanctioned load or household meter capacity determines the maximum permissible system size. The scheme also places a limit on the total subsidy that can be availed. For instance, if a household has already received a subsidy of Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system, it cannot claim additional subsidy for future system expansion, even if such an expansion is permitted under state power regulatory rules.

The main advantage of solar power is that it reduces our dependency on polluting sources of energy and helps us to reduce carbon footprints on the earth. More adoption of solar power can help us mitigating climate change, air pollution and global warming. The main disadvantage of solar power is that it does not produce power at night and thus need energy storage systems to store surplus energy. The intermittency somtimes affects functioning and stablity of the grid. Thus to counter these, in large projects, we need extra investments on energy storage.

As per the PM Surya Ghar scheme norms, only the registered solar vendors can undertake residential rooftop solar installations. The consumers can get subsidies for rooftop solar projects under the PM Surya Ghar scheme only if they get their installations done by registered vendors only. The National Rooftop Portal maintains a list of all the registered solar vendors who are undertaking these installations. For getting registered with the local discom, these companies also need to pay annual fees to them to get their registrations done.
