Generally, rooftop solar offers an ROI of over at least 20% in most markets today. Hence, it gives a payback period of about 4-5 years. Even without any subsidy or incentives, chances are, it will pay back your investment in 7 years or less with good maintenance and a net metering regime.

It mainly depends on the promptness of the local discoms in granting persmissions, the cooperation of your vendor and the response of the National Rooftop Portal in processing the response. In case there is no meter load enchancement need, the whole process usually takes 30-60 days in most states. In states like Gujarat the whole process often gets done within one month. In case a person wants to increase the sanctioned capacity, this process alone takes one extra month besides normal rooftop solar installation time. But the meter load enchacement request is often made before applying for rooftop solar.

No. The govt regulated entities like your local discom plays the role of granting permissions. But the actual installation of rooftop solar is done by private companies. You can select your company based on your choice in the National Rooftop Portal during your application.

The overall rooftop solar systems in India had been limited. However with the launch of PM Surya Ghar scheme with more capacities and easier application process, the residential rooftop solar system is likely to increase.
