    Consumers who want to apply for the connections under the scheme can apply through the National Rooftop Solar Portal also called PM Surya Ghar Portal. Here the consumers need to make an online account with their mobile number and OTP, fill the form and submit their applications. Application is free of cost. After the application, the local power distribution company takes up the Feaibility Report and after that the consumer cabn choose their vendors who can install the project. Consumers also need to fill their bank account details and the government gives subsidies after the commissiong of the project. The subsidies comes after around 30days-45 days. Consumers can also track the status of their project and disbursement of the subsidies with this portal.

    To boost the integration of solar power with the Indian grid, the Indian government is promoting on-grid rooftop solar through PM Surya Ghar where special subsidies are given to promote consumers to install rooftop solar. In this system, the surplus (unused) solar power from these systems are injected into the grid. In case of large solar projects, these large amount of solar power are injected into the grid to make the grid more green. Large scale solar projects has also made solar power cheaper than power coming from polluting sources like coal.

    The major advancement in technology is the progression on more efficient solar modules. Earlier India saw polycrystalline modules which had lesser efficiencies. Later major solar module makers started making mono-PERC technology based solar modules which could offer effiiencies of around 21%. Now the country is slowly moving to TOPCon technology which offers efficiencies higher than mono-PERC. Another advancement had been was in bringing more Wp panels. Now India has panels having a maximum Wp power of upto 680Wp. Higher Wp power means that to generate the same amount of solar power we would need lesser number of panels as a single higher power panel can produce enough power.

    That’s a very good question, and we will try and answer it as comprehensively as possible here. Corporate PPAs in India have typically been at a 50 percent or higher premium over bids at government backed tenders, and for good reasons. Right at the top is the matter of scale. The low rates of Rs 2.50 and around that you see for solar tenders are for capacities that typically are in the 100 MW plus range, at the least.

    Secondly, government tenders come with significant flexibility on location, something most corporate PPAs don’t. In a majority of cases, particularly large solar rooftops, the installations have to be in the same state or even corporate plant site. That impacts generation.

    Then we have the issue of long term government PPAs versus corporate ratings, which affects cost of funds for the developer. Funds are typically raised for shorter tenures, at higher costs in case of corporate PPAs.

    Finally, project timelines in government tenders are 24 months or higher, allowing developers to make the most of buying opportunities for key inputs like modules. In corporate deals, project timelines can be as little as 6 months, forcing developers to move faster with limited flexibility.

    All of these add up to a significantly higher cost, and this is before taking into account multiple charges at state level open access regulations, versus supplying to discoms directly.
